Winfor “Win” Tucker loved music all his life. He began playing drums at the young age of 11. He appreciated all types of music but had a deep love for percussion and Jazz the most. He became a professional drummer and began touring while playing with many different well known artists. Most notably Aretha Franklin. He eventually slowed down and decided to put touring on hold to start a family.
Still having a love for music and drums, Win became a drum teacher, giving lessons from home. At the age of 72, Win devoted his weekdays and weekends to over 30 students who told him “The highlight of my week is coming to you for my drum lesson.” On Christmas Eve of 2014, Win and his family were unexpectedly hit with shattering news that Win was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. He fought hard with radiation treatments and prayers. Unfortunately he passed away on Jan 21st, 2015, just four days after his birthday.
About a week before his birthday he asked his family if they could help him down to the basement so he could see and hear his drums. He didn’t allow the cancer or the pain he was feeling to stop him from going downstairs as his oldest daughter played the one beat he had taught her and she had mastered years ago for him. Cancer may have defeated Win’s physical form, but it will never overshadow his legacy.
To ensure that his legacy continues, Win’s daughters, Sarah and Veronica Tucker, have started the ‘Win Tucker Percussion Award,’ to help students who have a deep love for music and percussion just as Win did. This award will not only pay for students to have lessons, but as Sarah and Veronica put it, “We hope to assist in giving something that becomes the highlight of someone’s week, and leaves an impact on their life…just as our dad did for so many others.”
